Photographer Sam Folsom

I am a landscape photographer in the San Francisco Bay Area, where I have lived for more than 30 years. I'm fascinated by the wonders of nature, and I regularly explore the nearby coast and foothill woodlands looking for subjects that inspire my creative eye. Periodically I also do photography expeditions farther afield, including the mountains, forests, and deserts of the American west and other locations. My work as a photographer has evolved over the years, as I have become more interested in intimate landscapes rather than grand scenes. I rarely go out with a specific objective, preferring instead to wander with my camera and letting my curiosity be the guide. If I return home without any photographs, I'm happy to have spent a good day outdoors.

I’m originally from New England, and I grew up in the Rocky Mountains of Montana and Colorado, where I spent a lot of time outside. I learned photography in high school, shooting black and white film and doing darkroom processing. I failed to continue my development as a photographer at the time, as life’s priorities took me in other directions. Years later, as the kids got older and I had a little more time, I returned to photography with renewed interest and a desire to create images that expressed my vision of nature.
